BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) recognized some of its best and brightest student-athletes on Wednesday with the announcement of the 2020-21 Elite 22 Awards.
Gustavus’s Sydney Regalado (Jr., Rosemount) won the honor for women’s golf, while Nick Aney (Jr., Rochester) was the recipient for men’s tennis.
The MIAC Elite 22 Award recognizes the true essence of the term “student-athlete” by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the conference championship level in their sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. Modeled after the NCAA Elite 90 Award, the MIAC Elite 22 Award is presented to the student-athlete with the highest grade-point average (GPA) in each sport who meets similarly high, sport-specific athletic requirements. Eight sports participated in MIAC championship competition in 2021 and the conference is proud to recognize eight individuals who have modeled excellence without compromise in both athletics and academics this year.
Regalado carded a three-round score of 236 to finish among the top-10 at the 2020-21 MIAC Golf Championships. Regalado played in all 10 rounds this spring season, averaging 82.2 strokes per round. A Biochemistry and Chemistry major, Regalado boasts a 3.95 GPA.
Aney played No. 1 singles and doubles for the MIAC champion Gusties, going 3-6 overall in singles and 11-4 in doubles in 2021. He is a Biochemistry and Molecular Biology major with a 3.98 GPA. Aney is set to compete in both the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships this weekend.
