NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s tennis team competed on the road for the first time in three weeks and defeated Carleton 6-3. The Gusties improve to 12-2 overall and 7-0 in the MIAC, while the Knights lose their first match at 4-1 overall and 3-1 in the league.
Gustavus won 8-4 in both Nos. 1 and 2 doubles with the Knights winning at No. 3. Four of the six singles matches went to a third set with the Gusties claiming wins at Nos. 2, 3, 5, and 6.
“The guys played a great match today,” Head Coach Tommy Valentini said. “It was exciting and challenging from start to finish. We competed very hard in the doubles. Xavier and Daniel got us rolling at number two, and Nick and Alex were able to erase and early break and play a great match at one to get us the lead. In the singles, the line was razor thin. We got a great lift from Jack today in the six spot. Nicky played a strong match against one of the nation’s best at one and came up just short despite competing very well. At 2-5 our guys all were able to remain poised and calm and they handled the late and close moments very well. We were fortunate to have Caleb, Neel, and Daniel all come through. It was a blast to compete today. Carleton is a very talented and strong team. We’re certainly thankful for the result, but more importantly I’m proud of how our guys competed and stuck together. We made good progress today, and will look to build on it moving forward.”
