NORMAL, Ill. – The Gustavus men’s golf team got its first start of the season at the Illinois Wesleyan invitational. The Gusties finished with a first round score of 310 and shot 22 over par to sit at fifth place.

“Tough conditions for our first competitive round today,” said Head Coach Scott Moe. “We certainly felt the jitters as our round got underway. We left ourselves too many par putts around 4 to 7 feet all day. Only having three birdies is not something we are used to doing, hopefully we will give ourselves more looks during tomorrow’s round.  Really solid first varsity match for Wyatt. JP hit the ball well but was not rewarded for his efforts. With our first tournament round out of the way, we will continue to gain experience and start to feel more comfortable over the ball.  We battled hard and it will benefit us.  Looking forward to another opportunity tomorrow morning.”

Wyatt Wasko (So., Lake Elmo) leads the black and gold in ninth place out of 110 golfers on the leaderboard after shooting a 74. Rookie golfer Tommy Hinker (Fy., Edina) finished three strokes back at 77, and Jacob Pedersen (Jr., Minnetonka) rounded the first round scoring with a 78.

Rob Wuethrich of Illinois Wesleyan leads the field after carding a 67.

The tournament will continue into Saturday.
