DES MOINES, Iowa – The Gustavus men’s tennis team dropped its first match of the season on Sunday at Division I Drake University by a score of 5-2. The Gusties are now 7-1 overall, while the Bulldogs are 4-4.
Xavier Sanga (Sr., Madison, Wis.) and Daniel Fouchier (So., Nootdorp, Netherlands) won their No. 2 doubles match 7-5, but the Bulldogs claimed victories at Nos. 1 and 3 to capture the one point for doubles in the Division I format.
Caleb Fridinger (Fy., Woodbury) and Indraneel Raut (Jr., Oshkosh, Wis.) gave the Gusties their two points in singles – Fridinger with a three-set victory and Raut winning by retirement.
“It was great to get out and compete at this level today,” Head Coach Tommy Valentini said. “The guys had great energy in the doubles. Nick and Alex had a few good looks at number one and and Xavier and Daniel were great at two – especially in the way they raised their game in the big moments to pick up a great win. In the singles we competed very well and gained some very important experience. Neel did very well to hold his nerve and stay in the second after his opponent was injured, and he was able to extend the match to where the opponent couldn’t get out quickly and had to retire. Caleb was fantastic. His opponent competed very well and played some great points at the end of the second set, but Caleb stayed calm, positive, and poised in making a few tactical adjustments and trusting his game down the stretch. It was fun to see him be rewarded with the result in that one. In the end we will take a lot away from this match that we can learn from as we move on, and we were very thankful for the opportunity to be together and to be competing again.”
