SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s tennis team returned to MIAC play Saturday afternoon at the Swanson Tennis Center and came away with a 9-0 win over Saint John’s. The Gusties remain unbeaten on the season at 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the MIAC, while the Johnnies drop to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in the league.
The Gusties started the afternoon with quick 8-0, 8-3 wins at Nos. 3 and 2 doubles, respectively, while the No. 1 doubles team of Nick Aney (Jr., Rochester) and Alex Budde (So., Menomonee Falls, Wis.) fought back from a 6-5 deficit to win 8-6. In singles, the Gusties won all six matches in straight sets, not conceding more than two games in any set. The depth of the Gusties was prevalent today as they used 12 different players to complete the shutout victory.
“The guys competed very well today,” Head Coach Tommy Valentini said. “We got a great start from Oscar and Caleb at No. 3 doubles, and Xavier and Daniel executed their game plan very well at No. 2. The Saint John’s No. 1 doubles team is strong and played a great match. Nick and Alex were able to stay very poised and trust their game down the stretch to win there. That match gave us some great momentum heading into the singles. Our depth was a real factor for us across the board in singles and the guys did a great job staying focused and embracing the opportunity to compete all day.”
