SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s tennis team won its 10th consecutive match, and fourth-straight this season, by defeating UW-Eau Claire 7-2 Saturday at the Swanson Tennis Center. The Gusties improve to 4-0 overall and hand the Blugolds their first loss this season at 2-1.
Gustavus started the afternoon with quick wins at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles by scores of 8-0 and 8-3, respectively. No. 3 doubles went 8-6 in favor of UW-Eau Claire. In singles play, the Gusties won five matches in straight sets with the lone loss going to a third set.
“Again, we were very grateful to have the opportunity to compete today,” Head Coach Tommy Valentini said. “Eau Claire has some good depth, so we knew we would have to play at a high level today to come through. Nick and Alex got us going with great energy and tactics at No. 1 doubles and Xavier and Daniel showed good poise and executed very well at No. 2 to get us a lead. Despite a tough loss, Oscar and Caleb stayed positive at No. 3 doubles and that helped us transition into the singles. We were able to stay calm in some critical moments early in first sets on most of the singles courts, and then we were able to settle in and play some very good tennis.”
