SAINT PETER, Minn. – After day one of the Gustavus vs. St. Thomas women’s swimming dual meet, the Gusties lead the Tommies 569-360. There were nine events on Saturday with the Gusties winning seven of them, setting seven pool records and one school record in the process.
The 200 free relay team of Ellen Hofstede (So., Hopkins), Abby Yartz (So., Bemidji), Lucy Peterson (Fy., Saint Paul), and Amelia Bjorklund (Sr., Bloomington) started the meet be setting a new pool record with a winning time of 1:35.22. Hailey Auran (Sr., Saint Paul) followed that performance by winning the 200 IM in 2:09.51, setting another pool record. In the third event, Annika Johns (So., Stillwater) followed suit by setting a pool record in the 500 free with a time of 5:10.47. The trend continued in the fifth event as Auran crushed the pool record by three seconds in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:21.06. And not to disappoint in the sixth event, Hofstede set a pool and school record in the 100 free with a time of 50.81.
Event eight featured yet another pool record as Bjorklund, Auran, Evie Lima (Fy., Neenah, Wis.), and Hofstede won the 400 medley relay in 3:53.72, breaking a 20-year-old record by more than 13 seconds. And in the final event, Hofstede, Bjorklund, Johns, and Peterson broke a 10-year-old school record in the 800 free relay with a time of 7:48.94.
Day two of the meet starts at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.
