Associate Professor of Education Lisa Dembouski and students Payton Buss ’21, Casey Olson ’21, Abbie Ranzau ’21, and Andrew Stumbo ’21 presented Teaching and Teacher Preparation *as* Activism for Peace and Justice at the 30th Annual (and first ever virtual) National Association for Multicultural Education (N.A.M.E.) Conference, October 9-10, 2020.

Their interactive discussion shared the experiences of the four Gustavus education majors/teacher candidates. During the conversation, the teacher candidates shares the assignments, field placements, personal experiences, and meaningful, relevant events that precipitated their thinking about equity, justice, antiracism, activism, and the ways they personally and professionally can (and should) be change agents for peace and equity in schools and the larger world. Inherent in this discussion are suggestions for effective lessons, assignments, and experiences that can promote activist thinking, growth, and awareness development in session participants’ own students, regardless of their intended majors or careers.
