Anyone who has spent time on the Hill knows how Gustavus prides itself on empowering the next generation to act on our world’s greatest challenges and prepare for a life of service.
That legacy is making headlines: The Wall Street Journal named Gustavus the top college in Minnesota. Gustavus is a top-producing Fulbright Institution. The New York Times and U.S. News celebrate us for excellence, accessibility, and affordability. Accolades such as these are only possible thanks to generations of support from our community. For that, we are incredibly grateful.
As we prepare to celebrate another Gratitude Week, April 22–25, we wanted to highlight a few of the many Gusties who have blossomed from the connections they’ve made and the opportunities they’ve enjoyed. Meet Jacob, Yahya, and Linnea — three outstanding Gusties who uniquely benefit from our community’s unparalleled support — and learn more below about the Gustavus Fund and how you can help current and future generations of impressive Gustavus students.
Jacob Coulimore ’25, Seattle, WA —Exercise Physiology major, Sport Management minor
Jacob committed to play football at Gustavus without visiting campus. But he felt drawn to the College’s supportive culture before stepping on the Hill. “Gustavus was the most affordable option for me, and the professors set Gustavus apart,” he said.
This leap of faith has become one of the best decisions he’s ever made. Between football, Greek Life, and working at the Book Mark and in the Advancement Office, Jacob feels equipped for his career in exercise science. He’s thankful for support from every corner of the Gustavus community. “You don’t get these same experiences at other institutions,” he said. “I’ve had amazing conversations with so many alumni, and I see how their support helps fill needs and run the College.”
Yahya Bashir ’24, Minneapolis, MN — Computer Science major, Economics minor
Yahya has over 53 million likes and half a million followers on TikTok—and counting. He’s wrapping up his senior year and brimming with ideas for his career. Yahya says the Gustavus community validated and bolstered his dreams. “I’m the first person in my family to go to college,” he said. “Everyone here is supportive, especially the professors.”
Yahya’s family moved from Kenya to Minneapolis in high school. He had his mind set on a tech career. He committed to Gustavus with a soccer invitation. His first few years were full, but he struggled to find his community at first. “I was always busy,” he said. “Class, then track, then soccer.”
But when a soccer injury kept him from playing sports, he took the opportunity to launch his TikTok. Suddenly, the campus became his canvas. “I started asking people to be in my content,” he said. “It also helped me get out of my shell and be more outgoing. That journey has been really helpful.”
Linnea Hanson ’25, Hastings, MN — Biology major
Linnea always had Gustavus on her radar. She knew a lot of people from her hometown who became Gusties, and when she stepped on campus, everything clicked. “I felt like it was here,” she said. “There wasn’t a question in my mind.”
Running from work to lab to G-Choir practice, Linnea is bursting with passion. She also volunteers with Gustie Buddies, the Pre-PA Club, and the Student Philanthropy Council. She even finds time to play intramural basketball. “I really love that we’re a liberal arts college,” she said. “I was looking for a college where I could pursue all my interests, like being in music while being in STEM.”
Linnea is incredibly proud to be a part of a generous Gustavus community, especially since she’s met alumni while working in the Advancement Office. “I see all the work that goes on behind the scenes,” she said. “I see how all these wonderful people are giving back. We directly benefit from that.”
