Dr. Janani Sridhar will be performing at Gustavus Adolphus College with pianist Alexander Woods, on September 30, at 7:30 p.m..
Dr. Sridhar is a world-renowned singer and performer. She is the first Singaporean to win the top prize at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod as well as the first singer to have received the HSBC Youth Excellence Award.
Sridhar holds a Bachelor of Music from Oberlin Conservatory of Music, a Master of Music from Manhattan School of Music, and a Doctor of Musical Arts from Stony Brook University. Her talent doesn’t stop with performing, however. Sridhar has served as an adjudicator for the Texas Private School Music Educators Association, National Association of Teachers of Singing, as well as being invited to present at conferences, and speak on panels as an industry professional.
Woods holds positions at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Borromeo Music Festival, and St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church, and has performed in Switzerland, Italy, and throughout the United States. He has worked at the University of Minnesota, Gustavus Adolphus College, and for several competitions, churches, and choral ensembles.
Woods and Sridhar are good friends and are excited to collaborate for the Gustavus College performance.
“We developed our artistic connection and friendship around our shared love for many styles of vocal music”, says Woods. “We gave our first recital in Louisiana, Wisconsin, and Minnesota in spring 2022. It was a program of American art song, standards, musical theatre, and spirituals.”
In regards to this performance, Woods also highlights that “This performance at Gustavus will feature a variety of genres from Spain, Portugal, Argentina, Puerto Rico, and more. It’s important for us to perform at Gustavus so that students, faculty, and community members can experience a song recital that may be different from what they’re used to.”
Dr. Sridhar explains, “ I hope that those who come to the recital will be moved, and find that the repertoire we will be performing resonates with them. Music is a universal language, and I look forward to bringing folks on a musical journey with Alex and me.”
Woods and Dr. Sridhar express their appreciation for the support from Miguel Sousa and the Johnson Fund committee, Dr. Patricia Snapp, Dr. Esther Wang, and Dr. Chad Winterfeldt.
