Library Updates from Michelle Twait ’98

Greetings from the Gustavus Library!  Besides chipping away at our “to read” piles, Library faculty and staff have been busy over the summer with various projects.  From assisting summer STEM students with their research to shifting several ranges of the book stacks, we continue to live out our mission during the summer months.  Our Physical Plant colleagues also helped us update the GLA Reading Room with a fresh coat of paint and new wall decor (see photos).

By the time we hear the Gustie Greeters blowing their whistles, we are ready to welcome the new and returning students.  The new academic year is always a whirlwind of activity, and this year is no different.  Here are some of the highlights:

New Tenure-Track Colleague

The Library will welcome a new TT colleague this fall:  Rachel Flynn will be joining us as an Assistant Professor & Academic Librarian (Digital Liberal Arts).  Most recently, Rachel served as the Information Literacy librarian at the University of Minnesota-Duluth.  Previously, she was in a visiting position here at Gustavus.  Rachel earned her MLIS at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and has a BA in Art History from the University of Minnesota.  We are excited that Rachel will be (re-)joining us this year!

Fall 2023 Intern

We welcome Mia Eisenbacher as our Fall 2023 intern.  Mia is a senior this year, majoring in English.  Michelle Twait will be serving as Mia’s faculty sponsor and Julie Gilbert will serve as her site supervisor.  Like our other interns, we will provide Mia with an overview of library operations; opportunities to participate in reference, instruction, and collection development; and we will encourage her to bring her own ideas to the internship.

Fall 2023 Academic Assistant

Alivia (“Liv”) Rohda ‘26 will be our Fall academic assistant.  Liv will be working closely with the Library’s Outreach & Promotion committee.  She will assist with special events, perhaps do some tabling on behalf of the Library, contribute to our social media posts, and engage in other activities that help us promote the Library’s collections, spaces, and services.

Best wishes to Leah Zacate

After earning her Master’s degree in Library and Information Science this August, Leah Zacate (Information Desk and Assets Specialist) is leaving Gustavus to pursue her passions and move forward with her career goals.  Her last day at the College will be Friday, September 8th.  We thank Leah for her years of service and wish her the best in her future endeavors.

Future Gustie

Kate Sonsteby, our Acquisitions Manager, welcomed Micah Robert into the world on September 3rd.  Kate will be on parental leave for most of the fall semester.  We offer our heartiest congratulations to Kate, spouse Nick (Gustavus Technology Services), and big brother Jonah.  We can’t wait to meet this future Gustie!
