Statement from President Rebecca Bergman to the Gustavus Adolphus Community:
We will soon learn what the Supreme Court of the United States will conclude regarding the use of race in admission decisions. The outcome of these cases could have profound implications for the future of diversity and inclusion in American higher education. As we await this outcome, I want to reaffirm to the entire Gustavus community that the College remains committed to expanding our diversity and being accessible and welcoming to all students, regardless of background.
As we anticipate potential changes to admission processes after more than 50 years under the present legal guidelines, I remind you that Gustavus has been a mission-centered institution since its founding in 1862. We have been, and will always be, a place that aspires to be a community of persons from diverse backgrounds who respect and affirm the dignity of all people, and whose students are equipped and encouraged to work toward a just and peaceful world.
We admit and support students from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds not only as a moral duty, but because it’s a vital element of a first-rate liberal arts education. Diversity enhances our community and fosters a vibrant and supportive learning experience for all. This is why we’ve created and remain committed to our robust DEIB ecosystem that engages students, employees, alumni, and trustees in initiatives and programs that foster diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and anti-racism. It’s also why we strive to make a Gustavus education accessible and affordable to the broadest possible range of students.
I also want to share with you some resources that address race in higher education admissions that are available online. These resources include statements, webinars, events, and guidance from various organizations and experts that support diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in higher education. These resources can help you learn more about how race-conscious admissions practices have benefitted students and society.
Although this decision may alter some admission and enrollment processes, I’m confident we have the necessary ingenuity and resilience to fulfill our mission and promote and defend diversity, whatever the new laws may be. Since the day we opened, Gustavus has been an inspiration and aspiration for students who want to earn a high-quality liberal arts degree, address the great challenges of their time, and change the world.
Diversity and inclusion are at the heart of our community, and we are committed to building a culture of achievement and belonging for everyone. Thank you for your support and solidarity as we address this challenge together. Regardless of the final decision, we will determine next steps and communicate any updates as this situation evolves.
