SAUK CENTRE, Minn. — The Gustavus men’s golf team is tied for eighth after round one at the Saint John’s Invitational. The Gusties shot a 306 (+18) and are 16 strokes behind leader and host Saint John’s. The Gusties have three teams in competition, with the second team sitting in 10th (308) and the final team of Gusties in 16th (333).
Teddy Kaste (So., Apple Valley) is leading the Black and Gold, shooting a 74 in the first round to tie for 15th. Kaste picked up four birdies in round one to lead the Gustie A team. Chris Gutuza (Fy., Johannesburg, South Africa) and Jack Reinardy (So., Andover) are both tied for 35th after shooting a 77 in round one. Cam Longie (So., Hutchinson) is leading the second Gustie team, tied for 29th after round one with a 76. Longie posted a pair of birdies as well as one of three Gustie eagles on the day, as Sam Skaar (Sr., Coleraine) and Khrystjan Petersen (Jr., Fairbault) each added one of their own in round one.
“Our game plan for the day was to come out playing confidently and aggressively going after pins when we could,” Assistant Coach Randy Stuckey said. “That seemed to work out fine for most of the round but as the round went on, we did not finish. This is something that good teams do and we need to do tomorrow.”
The invitational concludes tomorrow at Monticello Country Club.
