MAPLE PLAIN, Minn. — The Gustavus men’s golf team won a MIAC dual meet against nationally-ranked No. 14 Saint John’s on Thursday at Pioneer Creek Golf Course. The Gusties shot one-over par 289, edging the Johnnies by one stroke.

“Big W for the squad today. Saint John’s is a great team and it took a total effort to make it happen,” said Head Coach Scott Moe. “Really proud of our guys hanging in there throughout the round. This is what we have been missing, we threw out a 74 today, we haven’t done that all year.”

Despite Saint John’s carding the top three finishes of the day, the Gusties packed the top 10 to get the victory. Chris Gutuza (Fy., Johannesburg, South Africa), Sam Skaar (Sr., Coleraine), and Wyatt Wasko (Sr., Lake Elmo) led the charge, all tying for fourth, carding an even-par 72.  Jack Reinardy (So., Andover) and Teddy Kaste (So., Apple Valley) rounded out the first Gustie team, with Reinardy finishing seventh and carding a 73 (+1) and Kaste at eighth (74).

The second Gustie team was led by Andrew Hoppe (Sr., Mankato), who finished 11th in the 30-player field at 75 (+3), while Ben Forsberg (Jr., Shafer) led the final Gustie group, shooting 80 (+8) on the day.

“We also played a match play event today, winning that setup 8-7. Saint John’s is a very good team, so anytime you beat them you had to play well to do so. Hopefully this gives us some confidence heading into the weekend for our final event.

“It was great to see Wasko birdie his final hole, and it was really nice to see him finish with all of his teammates around. Really looking forward to the final weekend!”

Gustavus next competes at the Saint John’s Invite on Saturday at the Lynx National Golf Course in Sauk Centre and then Sunday at the Monticello Country Club.
