NORMAL, Ill. — The Gustavus men’s golf team opened its spring season at the Illinois Wesleyan Invite, taking a trio of teams to compete at the Ironwood Golf Course in Normal, Ill. After round one, the first team sits in 18th, the second team in 21st, and the third team in 36th.
Wyatt Wasko (Sr., Lake Elmo) and Teddy Kaste (So., Apple Valley) lead the Gusties individually, as both are tied for 34th among 213 athletes. Wasko and Kaste both posted a score of 76 (+4), with Wasko making four birdies in his round, and Kaste picking up one of his own. Khrystjan Petersen (Jr., Fairbault) and Pelayo Perez (Fy., Sotogrande, Spain) aren’t far behind, each carding 77, which has them tied for 53rd. Tommy Hiniker (Jr., Edina) is leading the Gustavus C team posting an 80 after earning a trio of birdies in his round.
“Definitely could tell that it’s been six months since we last competed, we had some early jitters, and putting was a little off. We battled hard, need to clean up some mental mistakes,” said Head Coach Scott Moe. “We had three really good days of practice leading up to today, playing a couple top courses in quad cities. I expect us to feel better on the course tomorrow. Hitting balls and putting in competition is much different than hitting balls inside. We will adjust and we look forward to battling tomorrow. Proud of the battle, we know the effort will always be there.”
The Gusties continue play tomorrow at Weibring Golf Course.
