ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Gustavus women’s hockey team rolled to a 6-1 victory over St. Catherine Friday night, erupting for six unanswered goals after a quick tally by the Wildcats. With the win, the Gusties improve to 15-2-0 overall and 10-1-0 in conference play.

The Wildcats, who have averaged 3.7 goals per game this season, started off strong, putting an early goal behind Katie McCoy (Sr., Grafton, Wis.) just 2:43 into the first period.

St. Catherine’s goal shook the Gusties into action, who dominated the remainder of the period, outshooting the Wildcats 12-3. Hailey Holland (Sr., Aberdeen, S.D.) evened the score 15 minutes into the period, speeding into the zone and finding the bottom left corner to beat St. Catherine goaltender Elizabeth Kubicek to tie the game heading into the second. And Holland’s goal was only a taste of what was to come.

Tina Press (Sr., Cottage Grove) gave the Gusties their first lead of the game, finding the back of the net midway through the second period. With the goal, Press became the 13th player to reach 100 points in Gustavus women’s hockey history.

And she didn’t stop there.

Press added two more points before the end of the night, scoring another goal on the power play just three minutes after her first, and adding an assist on the final Gustie goal. Press, now with 102 points, is tied for 11th in the Gustavus women’s hockey record books.

Lily Mortenson (Fy., Champlin) added one more before the end of the second to give the Gusties a 4-1 lead after two. Brooke Power (Jr., Lakeville) was next to add a tally for the Gusties, extending her team lead in goals to 11. And just 55 seconds later, Hailey Holland added her second of the night, capitalizing off a rebound opportunity to seal the deal at 6-1 for the Gusties.

Press, Holland, and Emily Olson (Sr., Delano) all finished with three points each, while Katie McCoy picked up the win between the pipes, finishing with 11 saves on 12 shots.

The Gusties host the Wildcats tomorrow for a 2 p.m. MIAC contest in Saint Peter.
