ST. CLOUD, Minn. — The Gustavus women’s hockey team is nothing if not consistent.
After all, the Gusties tallied five goals — and three on the power play — for the second night in a row, defeating Saint Benedict for the MIAC sweep, 5-1.
The Gusties certainly didn’t waste any time putting one past the Bennies, as Molly McHugh (Sr., Minnetonka) picked up right where they left off the night before, taking a feed from Brooke Remington (Jr., Scandia) to get the Gusties on the board three minutes into the first. Hailey Holland (Sr., Aberdeen, S.D.), who posted two points the night before, capped off her weekend with a power play goal midway through the first 20, and Kayla Vrieze (Sr., Eagan) tacked one more on for the Gusties before the end of the first, capitalizing on another power play.
The second period was more of the same, as Brooke Power (Jr., Lakeville) added her second of the weekend just 1:20 into the period. While the Bennies cut the lead to three just a few minutes later, Kaitlyn Holland (So., Aberdeen, S.D.) posted an unassited power play tally in what would be the final goal of the game halfway through the second.
Katie McCoy (Sr., Grafton, Wis.) posted another MIAC victory, this time making 14 saves through three periods. Remington finished with helpers on three of the five goals, while Vrieze, Power, and Kaitlyn Holland each added one assist of their own to finish the night with two points. With six power play goals this weekend, the Gusties continue to establish their national lead in power play goals, with a total of 25 on the season so far.
The Gusties are back in action next weekend, heading to Minneapolis to take on Augsburg Friday night before inviting the Auggies to Don Roberts Ice Rink on Saturday.
