SAINT PETER, Minn. — Hot off scoring 12 goals against St. Scholastica last weekend, the Gustavus women’s hockey team was back at it again, this time scoring seven goals — including six in the third period — to defeat UW-Superior 7-0.
Both teams headed into the locker room after period one deadlocked at 0-0. Maria Widen (So., Burnsville) made one save in the opening frame of her first start for the Gusties this season. Her counterpart Rose Beeman saved all 14 of the Gusties’ first period attempts, including a shot from Hailey Holland (Sr., Aberdeen, S.D.) that ricocheted off of two posts.
Hannah Gray (So., Stillwater) broke the silence, netting her first goal of the season off a feed from Heather Olinger (Sr., Savage) nine minutes into the second. Jori Jones (Fy., Little Canada) saw some action between the pipes for the Gusties in the second, turning aside both shots she faced.
The Gusties truly shined in the third period, scoring six goals, including five on the power play, to build the lead over the Yellowjackets. Hailey Holland started the third period scoring off five minutes in, taking a feed from Emily Olson (Sr., Delano) to rush the puck in on Beeman and eventually find the back of the net on a wrap-around goal. Kaitlyn Holland (So., Aberdeen, S.D.) would be next for the Gusties, scoring off a faceoff win from Lily Mortenson (Fy., Champlin).
The Gusties’ next four goals would come just a minute apart from each other. Clara Billings (Sr., Rochester) would add her conference- and team-leading sixth and seventh of the season to give the Gusties a 5-0 lead. Sophia Coltvet (Jr., Arden Hills) added her first of the season off of a feed from Lindsey Bjerke (Sr., New Market), and Mortenson would add one more for a final score of 7-0. The Gusties finished the game with Katie McCoy (Sr., Grafton, Wis.) in net, who made two saves in the third.
The No. 2 Gusties will head to Blaine, Minn. on Friday for the first of a two-game MIAC series against Bethel. The Gusties will then host the Royals on Saturday for a 2 p.m. game and mental awareness night at Don Roberts Ice Rink.
