SAINT PETER, Minn. — For the third time in as many games, the Gustavus women’s soccer team battled to a 1-0 final score. Unfortunately, for the Gusties, it would be Hamline who would net the only goal of the game — in the final three minutes of play.
Both teams played deadlocked at 0-0 through 87 minutes, until Maya Dempsey would net her team-leading fourth goal of the season, giving the Pipers the last-minute lead and eventually a MIAC victory.
Both teams had their fair share of offensive chances through the first half, as the Gusties put 16 shots toward Piper goalkeeper Lauren Sicora, including seven on net in the first half. The Pipers would add nine shots of their own in the first, but Abby Goodno (Sr., Little Canada) turned away all four shots on goal through the first 45.
While the Gusties would outshoot the Pipers 24-18 overall, Sicora remained perfect between the pipes, turning away every Gustie attempt. Rachel Rehnelt (Sr., Albert Lea) and Elin Swenson (So., Uppsala, Sweden) shared the lead in offensive chances, putting three each on net.
The Gusties (4-6 in conference and 7-8-1 overall) cap off their regular season competition as they face Macalester Saturday afternoon in St. Paul.
