On April 26th, the U.S. Census Bureau released the first data compiled from the 2020 decennial survey. This information included state populations and the apportionment of representatives in Congress for the next decade. Minnesota will maintains eight representatives and the state population grew to 5,709,752, about a 7.6 increase from 2010.
Looking at populations shifts, the Census has put together this interactive map of changes to population and apportionment with each Census back to 1910. Census.gov contains reports and data beyond population counts, including the American Housing Survey (AHS), the Annual Survey of Manufacturers (ASM), and Small Area Income and Poverty surveys. For those looking to extract and repurpose census data, specific datasets can be found at data.census.gov (formerly American FactFinder) or created with a free account at IPUMS, a project housed at the University of Minnesota that integrates and documents census and survey data from around the world.
Looking for more? As a Federal Depository library since 1942, Folke Bernadotte Memorial Library maintains extensive holdings of hard to find reports, socioeconomic studies, historical population data from the Census from the 20th century, county business and transportation surveys, and lots of informative maps. The types of Minnesota population resources include the Territorial Census of 1850 (Microfilm HA 451.5 1850 n.367) and housing data on blocks (the smallest Census geographic unit) for Saint Paul and Minneapolis in 1960, which includes average rents in different neighborhoods of the cities.
If you’re looking for surveyed data, think Census!
