Monday Moments with President Bergman: November 23, 2020

Gustavus President Rebecca M. Bergman shares her thoughts with College students, faculty, and staff each week.

President Rebecca M. Bergman

This week, we celebrate Thanksgiving, a holiday that is set aside for us to be conscious of all that we have to be thankful for in our lives. During the last nine months, while the novel coronavirus has dominated so many of our days and nights, it has been easy, at times, to let feelings of worry and loss dominate our thinking. Expressions of gratitude, on the other hand, bring out feelings of abundance, appreciation for the blessings and simple pleasures in life, and the beauty of everyday moments.

This week, I encourage you to cultivate and practice an attitude of gratitude. Studies have shown that practicing gratitude can increase happiness levels by more than 25 percent. We all long to be happier, and so, let’s all make this a Week of Gratitude. Make a point of being mindful of the goodness in our daily lives. And, perhaps you will find that a new habit of gratitude will be born.

What are some ideas of how to cultivate an attitude of gratitude?

  • Write a thank you note, send an email, or call someone you love who you will not get to see this Thanksgiving.
  • Write down 10 things you are especially grateful for, and read your list every day this week.
  • Start a gratitude journal, or download a gratitude journal app (there are several free ones).
  • Make a promise to yourself to avoid complaining or criticizing others. If you slip up, catch yourself, rally your willpower and start again.
  • Give a gesture of kindness to show a relative or a friend how much you care about them.

Today, I am especially grateful for our Gustavus community. You have inspired me with your hard work, your diligence in following the health guidelines to keep each other safe, and your willingness to adjust and adapt to new ways of living and learning. THANK YOU!

Until next week, Gusties, join me in cultivating an attitude of gratitude.

Yours in community,

President Bergman
