History professor Maddalena Marinari, along with professor Erika Lee of the University of Minnesota and Gustavus history majors Catherine Lim and Lillie Ortloff, have been awarded a SSRC COVID-19 Rapid Response Grant from the Social Science Research Council. Of over 1000 applicants, they are one of 62 recipients of the grants.

Their project, titled “Documenting and Archiving the Impact of Covid-19 on African, Asian, and Latinx Immigrant and Refugee Communities,” will document the health, economic, and social impact of coronavirus on these communities in the United States. Dr. Marinari, Lim, and Ortloff will expand on the database that Professor Lee and the University of Minnesota have begun by collecting news reports, data, perspectives, and other resources on the experiences of immigrants, asylum seekers, and refugees in the United States.

Their goal is to document the current crisis for the historical record and provide a publicly accessible resource for research, teaching, creative work, and advocacy that informs equitable and social-justice-centered responses to the pandemic. They will aim to examine how long-standing inequalities influence why and how these communities have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic.
