SUBJECT: 2020 Commencement Update
DATE: April 9, 2020

This morning, the President’s Cabinet made the difficult decision to officially postpone commencement for the Gustavus Class of 2020. Though this announcement comes as no surprise in our current situation, I know that our seniors and all of us in the Gustavus community hoped that we would be able to come together for graduation on May 30.

Make no mistake, we will celebrate the Class of 2020 with an in-person, on-campus commencement ceremony. As soon as circumstances allow, we will set a date to join as a community to cheer on the accomplishments of our graduating students and recognize their hard work in earning a baccalaureate degree from Gustavus. Gustavus seniors, I know that May 30, 2020 has been on your calendar for a long time. Keep that date circled–we are working on finding a way to make the day special for you even though we will not be together in person.

Students, faculty, and staff, I understand that you have many questions. Please know that a variety of scenarios are being developed regarding a new date for commencement. We are using the best possible information to guide our decision-making, including input from the Minnesota Department of Health and other community partners. I ask for your patience and understanding as we continue to navigate this disruption together.

Gusties are reacting to COVID-19 in a variety of ways. That is okay. You may be sad that you’re missing out on a beautiful spring on the hill or struck by the unusual quiet on campus. You might be stressed with work or filled with anxiety about online teaching and learning. Maybe your emotions change from day to day. Whatever your feelings, I want you to know that they are valid, and that you are valued.

In these uncertain times, we stand in community to confront this pandemic. Even though we are apart, together we are strong.

Yours in community,

President Bergman
