Gustavus President Rebecca M. Bergman shares her thoughts with College employees each week.

SUBJECT: Monday Moments with President Bergman
DATE: March 16, 2020

I want to start by saying thank you. Thank you for supporting our students and each other. Thank you for being mindful of the actions that each of us can take to stop the spread of COVID-19 by practicing social distancing and good personal hygiene (washing your hands, not touching your face, and cleaning doorknobs and work stations regularly). Most importantly, stay home if you feel ill. Thank you for being engaged, asking good questions, and seeking proactive solutions as we move forward together.

Our situation is rapidly evolving, changing from day to day and often from hour to hour. As you know, the College is closely monitoring developments, working and re-working contingency plans, and always making decisions with an eye toward the health and safety of students, faculty, and staff.

This is an extraordinary time for all of us at Gustavus and for people around the world. In challenging days like these, Gustavus is known for pulling together. I see that happening now and take heart in the fact that we can always rely on our core value of community–that we can always rely on one another.

In the past several days you have been inundated with information, so I will not do that here. Instead I leave you with this: Treat your students and colleagues with kindness, and give grace to those who need it. Be considerate that others’ needs may be different than your own. Be thoughtful with your words. Be quick to help, quick to apologize, and quick to share gratitude. Most of all, take care of yourself and those around you.

Through our actions, we will make a difference. This week, let us show the world the best of Gustavus.

I believe in us. I believe in you.

With respect,

Becky
