While most students at Gustavus followed this fall’s election through computer and television screens, political science major Jessye Flannery ’13 has had an up close and personal experience with politics thanks to a semester-long internship in the very heart of the nation’s political system, Washington, D.C.
Sophomore Joe Thayer has helped Gustavus become recognized as a Heart Safe Community thanks to his tireless work getting automated external defibrillators placed around campus. Thayer took his passion for heart health and community safety and combined it with knowledge learned through a Communication Studies course to make the project a success.
When Gustavus and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) celebrated the inaugural Division III Week (April 9-13), Gustavus took time to celebrate one of its own former student-athletes, Eric Butorac '03. Butorac has not only gone on to a successful career on the Association of Tennis Professionals World Tour, but he has also found a unique way to give back to his home state.
Miriam Lagus ’61 spent more than a dozen years working to raise funds to restore St. Martin’s Lutheran Church in Martna, Estonia, a parish her father served in. Inspired to help others by the community and spirit present during her time at Gustavus, her family, and God’s grace, she was able to raise nearly $90,000 to make repairs to this church half a world away.
Gustavus Adolphus College is home to a number of fraternities and sororities that are devoted to aiding and improving the St. Peter community and raising money for charities. Gustavus Greeks are responsible for a number of annual events on campus that raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research, diabetes, and world hunger just to name a few.
